UCSF Department of Psychiatry: Free Meditation Class and Brain Image! (Teens 14-18yo)
Drs. Tony Yang with UCSF Psychiatry and Olga Tymofiyeva with UCSF Radiology are conducting research with healthy adolescents ages 14-18 to improve their emotional well-being through a free virtual mindfulness meditation class. The goal of our UCSF BrainChange study is to use MRI imaging to observe brain changes in young people who participate in our class. Through this, we hope to learn more about how meditation positively changes the brain in developing adolescents!
Participating teens will get to undergo a free 12-week mindfulness training with trained instructors over Zoom, in which they will learn self-regulation skills (breathing, yoga-based movements, meditation) that can help them relax and better regulate emotions. The class will meet once-per-week for 1.5 hours over Zoom.
Participants will also undergo two MRI scans, one before and one after the training. MRI scans will take place at a state-of-the-art UCSF imaging facility at Mission Bay.
Participants who have completed all MRI scans and classes will receive up to $220 in Amazon gift cards as well as a picture of their brain!
