UC Berkeley School of Education: Online Study of Spelling Exercise, Ages 8-13
My name is Bowen Wang. I am a PhD student in Education at UC Berkeley. I am conducting research on a novel spelling exercise of hard-to-spell English words with my advisor, Professor Anne Cunningham (https://gse.berkeley.edu/anne-e-cunningham). We are looking for children aged 8-13 to try it out.
Your children are eligible if they are:
• 8 to 13 years old
• in grades 3-7
• native speaker of English
The study is entirely online via video calling software. Your child will be invited to participate in 2 sessions (up to 1.5 hours in total).
• Session 1 (35-45 minutes): (a) basic information survey; (b) the hard-speller exercise. We will deliver the exercise via a webcam-based eye tracking platform. We will record a video of the eye movement of your child during the exercise. However, they will not be present in the video. (c) an exercise on processing English spelling patterns.
• Session 2 (35-45 minutes): exercises on (a) processing English sounds, (b) reading aloud unfamiliar words, (c) spelling unfamiliar words, (d) recognizing vocabulary.
At the end of the study, we will also provide you with a report of your child’s performance in these exercises.
If you and your child are interested, you can fill out this short intake Qualtrics survey: https://berkeley.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_88kL5JKo6zQihgi. I will email you to confirm eligibility, answer your questions, and send you the parent permission and child assent forms to sign.
Alternatively, you can directly contact me, Bowen Wang, at bowenwang6266 [at] berkeley.edu. Participation is optional; not attending this study will not affect your relationship with your child’s teachers or school.
Thank you very much!
