Researchers & Authors Seeking Parents/Kids
SF Bay Area
School-Aged, Preteens, Teens

My name is Bowen Wang, and I am a 4th-year PhD student at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Education. I am conducting a research study on a novel spelling exercise of hard-to-spell English words with my advisor, Professor Anne Cunningham. Students are welcome to participate if they are:

1. in 4th-7th grade

2. native English speakers or bilingual children who speak English fluently

Students with or without dyslexia are welcome to participate.

The study includes two Zoom 1:1 sessions (30-45 minutes each).

Session 1:
basic background survey + spelling exercises

Session 2:
exercises on English sounds, word reading, and vocabulary

I and Brittney Cooper, a Speech Language Pathologist and doctoral student in Special Education, will each conduct one session. The study has received ethical approval from UC Berkeley, and is funded by the UCSF | UC Berkeley Schwab Center for Dyslexia and Cognitive Diversity.

Your child can choose a $10 gift card from Roblox, Burger King, Cold Stone Creamery, or Starbucks after completing the study!
We will also provide you with a report of your child’s performance.

If you and your child are interested, please fill out this short intake survey:

I will email you to confirm eligibility, send you the parent permission and child assent forms, and answer any questions.
You can directly contact me, Bowen Wang, at bowenwang6266 [at] berkeley.edu.
Participation is optional; not attending this study will not affect your relationship with your child’s teachers or school.
