Outside School: School Year Enrollment Open

K-12 Schools with Current Openings
Kinder, School-Aged, Preteens, Teens

Outside School is opening in the East Bay to offer families an alternative to current educational systems, getting children out into nature on a regular basis. Learning takes place through play at a natural pace that respects individuals’ interests and abilities while allowing them to get to deeply know their place on this earth, child led and teacher supported. If you're looking for something with more heart, more nature, and more fun for your child, please do enroll (and tell your friends!).

The K-12 school year begins on September 3 and is $800/month.

“Adults do not control children’s education; children educate themselves.” -Peter Gray, 2013, Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life

Heather Taylor, Outside School’s Founder, Teacher, and Administrator has been a formal educator since 2002 and has been working with children solely in outdoor environments since 2007. After seeing the effects that teaching outside has on children, such as developing strength and stamina, a descriptive vocabulary, a love of biology, and self-knowledge and self-worth, she never wants to teach indoors again. It is with this experience and great excitement that she begins her independent program.

“Most scientists today began their careers as children, chasing bugs and snakes, collecting spiders, and feeling awe in the presence of nature. Since such untidy activities are fast disappearing, how, then, will our future scientists learn about nature?” -Richard Louv, 2008, Last Child in the Woods

Enrollment is currently open for next school year and summer camp. Monthly Meet and Greets let you get to know Heather Taylor and beautiful Alvarado Park at the hub of El Cerrito, Richmond, and San Pablo. The next two before the school year starts are scheduled for Mondays May 6 and June 6, 11:00-12:00. Please feel free to share and visit www.outside.school for more information and a link to the application.
