REGISTRATION NOW OPEN: Sign up for Kala's After School Teen Studio Art Program

Classes for teens (6-12th grades) take place on Wednesdays, 4-6:30pm

February 2 — April 13, 2022 (10 wks)

(no classes April 4-8)

Participants  will gather weekly to engage in skill-based art making, and hands-on projects in a fun, supportive studio environment. Teens will explore different modes of expression and dive deep into the creative process while improving technical, representational, and conceptual skills. Our Kala instructors work closely with participants to create a space for creativity, inquiry, self-expression, reflection and collaboration.

Youth will practice different drawing, painting, and mixed media tools and techniques while working from observation and reference.  Along with the possibility of mixing digital and traditional media, there will be opportunities to draw the figure, facial expressions, and portraits as well as still life and the landscape/environment. They will learn about line quality, shading, color, and composition.

Through weekly focused assignments, participants will be supported in pursuing their own personal art goals and interests such as portfolio building,  specific media or artistic aspects they  want to learn and develop.

Throughout the year, participants will be introduced to the art of local and contemporary artists of various intersections or identities, experiences and backgrounds. Our young artists will have the freedom to explore a range of issues and themes relevant to their lives and their communities. While at Kala, they will have the opportunity to engage with Kala’s Residency Program artists, and visit Kala’s Print Studio, Digital Media Lab, and gallery exhibitions on view.
