Corey Wade: Berkeley Coding Academy: Learn the Code Behind AI - No experience required!

Summer & Holiday Camps
City:
Berkeley
Ages:
Preteens, Teens

Berkeley Coding Academy is back and better than ever with our 3rd Machine Learning & AI Summer Intensive. Students from across the Bay and beyond learn how to build and evaluate machine learning models in just 3 weeks. All students create 45+ coding notebooks and complete significant portfolio final projects. Over 100 4K videos supplement the learning process. Our program is 100% live & online.

BCA students start the day in live interactive lectures with program director Corey Wade. We code Python together as new coding concepts are introduced and modeled. Beginning and advanced students attend different lectures.

After lecture, students join small cohorts to solve coding problems and work on project development. All students choose their own datasets to apply what they learn in lecture. Final projects are peer and staff reviewed with Colab Notebooks and Google Slides. Final projects are presented on the last day and certificates are distributed.

BCA graduates have majored in data science in college, earned data science internships, taken advanced computer science sequences in high school, started AI clubs in high school, taken advanced machine learning classes with BCA, and pursued additional machine learning projects and classes independently.

Student takeaways are many! Students who have never coded before receive a tremendous foundation in computer science and Python, in addition to Data Analytics and Machine Learning. Students transform big data into meaningful, professional histograms and scatterplots using Python code. Students make predictions from big data with leading machine learning algorithms like xgboost. Students gain mastery over writing Python functions, loading CSV files, and generating descriptive statistics to analyze big data. Students become facile with the pandas, seaborn, matplotlib, and sklearn libraries. Advanced students apply grid searches to fine-tune machine learning models for optimal accuracy.

Our students get a real taste of what it's like to be a data scientist. We are a code first program. Students spend 52.5 hours over the summer focused on writing Python code. We do not focus on flashy results, but on writing and modifying code to extract meaningful insights from big data. With that said, we show students how to create colorful, visually impressive, and informative graphs to tell a data story. We include 15 minutes of bonus time every day for bonding and tangential programming topics. Bonus time is very popular!

We have an amazing staff. We spend considerable energy and time interviewing and training college interns who are young leaders in the fields of data science, programming, and education. The balance between learning from program director Corey Wade and cohort leads gives our students the best possible experience. Not only do they learn from an expert teacher at the peak of his career (over 10K teaching hours, math department chair, programming author, grant award winner, summer camp veteran), but they also learn from college mentors who serve as role models. Due to small cohorts (<9 ), students really know their mentors. A chat support team is included.

Berkeley Coding Academy stands out due to the strength of our content, and due to the expertise of our credentialed educators. This is truly a wonderful program for new coders, and students looking for next steps after taking AP Computer Science. Our program is differentiated for all levels of learners.
