Camp Reel Stories: Close Up Filmmaking Cohort - Girls and Non-Binary Youth

A film program for girls & non-binary youth (ages 12-18) that focuses on both the art of creating films in a team and building skills to critique media.

When: Weekly on Fridays @ 4:30pm-6:30pm PST. February 18th - May 6th, 2022

Where: This program will be held IN-PERSON at Oakstop, 1721 Broadway #201, Oakland, CA 94612. Oakstop is located near 19th street BART, as well as the 72 and 18 bus lines. There is public street parking around the area.

Who: Girls and non-binary youth ages 12 - 18 who have either attended a Reel Stories program in the past (ex. Summer Camp, After School Program, Master Class), or have other prior filmmaking experience (ex. a film camp, class, or something else!).

Cost: $500, though we offer sliding scale discounts to students who need financial support. We never turn anyone away due to lack of funds. If you’d like more information about applying for a discount or scholarship please contact yasamanford [at] bavc.org

About the Program:

Guided by a Media Teacher, participants will work closely with their team to create one of the following projects of their choice:

- Narrative (Fiction) Short Film

- Documentary (Non-Fiction) Short Film

- Mini 3 part Docuseries

- Mini 3 part Web Series

Participants will write their own stories, plan their own shoots and use Reel Stories’s film equipment to shoot and edit their projects at our Oakstop location in Downtown Oakland each Friday.

Optional virtual film theory discussions will be held on zoom every Wednesday at 4pm-5pm. Participants are not required to attend these meetings, they are just for fun!

Instructors:

Sarah Bryant-Cole is a Reel Stories alum, and current Narrative Film Instructor. They graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2021 with a BFA in Textile Design. They have been involved with Reel Stories since 2013.

Morgan Lewis is an African American woman filmmaker born and raised in the Bay Area. She is a senior undergrad at California College of the Arts. She has been a Reel stories instructor for 3 years where she teaches documentary filmmaking and different ways to incorporate found footage.

Yasaman Ford is a Reel Stories alum, Instructor and Program Coordinator for the Reel Stories programs at BAVC Media. She graduated from UCLA in 2020 with a Bachelors in Film and Television with a Concentration in Documentary and Digital Media.

COVID-19 Safety:

All participants and staff will be expected to wear a face mask in all circumstances except when actively eating or drinking. All participants are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19, with the exception for students who are unable to get vaccinated due to medical conditions or religion. Any students who are not vaccinated will be required to get tested for COVID-19 weekly and receive a negative test no more than 48 hours before each class. All staff members are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. There will be face masks and hand sanitizer available for all students and staff.
